According to the desired effect the selection of the music is done. If you want to have relaxation and or want to for the purpose of meditation or just for refreshing the mind, the music should be selected on the bases of simplicity and softness which can take you on the higher level of consciousness It should be noted that the music should not indulge the mind into any kind of analytical phase as that can divert the mind from the relaxation that is required.

Music which depends heavily on technology like that of rock and pop music and music which have its origin in revolt and anger like that with rap and hip hop as well as the music with high pitch sound and loud percussions like in case of blues and jazz are considered unsuitable for the purpose of music therapy. As these types of music show some amount of negativity in their origin and development are considered unsuitable for music therapy purpose.
To be effective in healing, music should have the following characteristics
Pulse:
At or below heart rate (72 per minute) for calming or reducing tension.
Rhythm:
Smooth and flowing at all times for integrating internal body rhythms and energy flows.
Melody:
Slow and sustained for meditation purposes; pitch sequences primarily by step at pulse rate or slightly faster for energizing.
Duration:
Minimum 15 minutes of steady music; 20-45 minutes is optimum.
Tone quality:
Generally the softer quality instrument like the flute and organ.
Resonance:
Should be sustained for 4 to 8 seconds for calming.
